What Kind of Church?

I remember the chorus of a gospel song that came out a few years ago. I have been unable to find out who wrote it, but the question it raised has been in my mind this weekend.

What kind of church would my church be,
If every member was just like me?
How many souls would be saved today,
If it all depended on what I say?
How many prayers would my Lord have to answer,
If all that He heard came from me?
I wonder, what kind of church would my church be,
If every member was just like me?

Just some thoughts to ponder. Hope you have a blessed day.

  1. I love that song, but I can’t think who sings it ,

and sad to say, if every member was just like me, it wouldn’t be much of a church! 😦

  2. Those are some good questions to ponder on.

  3. very nice lyrics. have a blessed day too.

  4. I never heard that song, but it is very convicting. Thanks. :~)

  5. My church would be much the same as it is today…She has been alive for 2ooo years and Her members are spiritual beings who are after God’s heart with the same desire and ferver that I have inside…She is far bigger than just little ole me…which is the beauty of the Church…She is made up of many members so I don’t have to carry all the weight. thank you Lord!

  6. A probing question, but I do not think it is exactly a helpful one.

  7. BTW…I saw you had mentioned on Godward Thoughts “alternative ways of having/being church” Is this a discussion I could get in on? such as someone’s blog?

  8. JG, you can check out that discussion at Theological Musings

  9. This was a touch queston for people to answer frankly, wasn’t it. I do like what Jada’s gigi had to say, though.

  10. I’ve heard that song too, but I don’t know the name. that’s a tough question. I think I’ll put it to my Bible study class at church!

  11. Michael P. Deslippe

The song was by J.D. Sumner and the Stamps Quartet.

    Chorus
How many times have I said “I love Jesus”,
And turned a deaf ear to a need
How many times have I said I’m a Christian,
But never one soul did I lead,
How many luxuries have I passed by,
To have more to give to the Lord?
Jesus I promise as long as I live,
from now on I’m gonna do more.
No wonder my pastor has so many burdens,
I never did offer to bear,
No wonder the members have bowed down with sorrow,
I never did offer to share
No wonder the heather are dying in sin,
No wonder the missions are lack,
My heart is so cold and I’ve lost my first love,
But Jesus I’m on my way back.
    Chorus

  12. Thank you, Michael. It’s nice to have you at Heavenly Heartburn.

  13. Jada’s gigi’s church has it all together it seems.
“My” church and most (from my experience) is comprised of both the strong and the weak in faith.
The whole point is to ask your self “How can I grow in love, obedience and faithfulnesss to Christ and the local body of believers…the church”. The lyrics to that song are motivating and challenge me to grow in faithfulness.

  14. Hi, Terry. I’m glad you liked this. Welcome to Heavenly Heartburn. Come back anytime.

Could be wrong, but I don’t believe this song was written by J.D. Sumner. I believe it was written by the Mullins Family (Roger, Cherie, or Buddy). Here’s a link to a performance of this song by the Mullins Family.

  16. Where can I purchase the sheet music? I remember seeing it in Singing News years ago but I wrote to them and they said they couldn’t help me.

  17. The song is done by The Mullins.
