I think we accept too many outside influences as substitutes for our internal beliefs. If the author could not reconcile with the practices of the Catholic Church, she should consider looking elsewhere for the truth. The reason there are so many different versions of Christianity is precisely because our ancestors were not afraid to move on when they believed where they were fell short of the ideals inherent in being a Christian. We forget that we were given the awesome responsibility of Free Will and Free Choice for a reason.

Where I grew up in Texas my folks always called the juice from fresh black-eyed peas cooked with a couple of slices of bacon potlikker. It had to have lots of cornbread to dip into it and fresh garden tomatoes and little green onions on the side. My dad also ate little fresh hot green peppers with it and my mom always cooked a few in with the peas. She also cooked in a few of the small pea-pods.
The snapped peas & the peppers looked just the same to kids until they bit into a pepper by mistake! Yowwie. Three generations of us carefully avoided anything longish in mom's peas. Are field peas another name for black-eyed peas?

Thanks for the 40 year old memories. I'm cryng with nostalgia. Nobody in Seattle knows anything at all about potlikker, or decent no-sugar cornbread.

I actually ended up at this blog because I had greens for dinner (cooked the only way I've EVER eaten them: with salt pork for flavor) and I was looking for ways to use pot liquor for flavoring in other recipes.

Soo...anyone know any?

Comment on Is Loving Christ the First Love of the Church? by Peter

A truth I have found in the Bible is that God relates Truth in accordance to "His omniscience" (i.e. if the One who is all knowing says first love God and then says love your neighbor) then it is clear to me (of limited knowledge) which is the starting sequence! Remember, we grow towards Heaven like tall trees seeking the light ... But then again, even though they grow taller than they are wide above ground, their route system in the earth equals the height and width of their branches below ground. Therefore it seems we must be equally rooted (spiritually above ground toward heaven and physically below in the earth with our fellow man. Please note also, that we are to love our "neighbor" as our self and not just our brother in Christ as our self.
Respectfully submitted, Peter

Furthering your comments on 1 John 2:12-13 ... To me, Jesus indicated in Mt 18:3 that unless we become like "little children" "we will never enter the kingdom of heaven," therefore, I believe the first mentioned [i.e. little children] is to all of the three generations, the second mention [i.e. fathers]is to the first generation - those at Jesus' time, the third mention [i.e. young men] is to their sons and the last mention [i.e. little children] is to their son or grandsons of the fathers. Therefore all generations must enter as "little children" to really know and Him thus share in His universal grace that is offered to all mankind of all ages.... However, only those who RSVP in the proper manner [i.e. as little children] will be saved!
